first_img A Donegal man who escaped from a prison in Co. Cavan on Thursday night is due to appear before a court in Derry later today.26-year-old Martin McDermott from Raphoe absconded from Loughan Prison – but was caught yesterday in Derry by the PSNI.In July of last year,  Martin McDermott was sentenced to seven years in jail, for the manslaughter of Leitrim Garda Gary McLoughlin.Prison Officers at Loughan House jail in Cavan noticed he was missing at around 5 o’clock on Thursday evening, while they were conducting a head count.A cross border search involving the Gardai and the PSNI was launched and he was captured yesterday in Derry by police.He’s due to appear before Derry Magistrates Court later, charged with criminal damage, three counts of assault on police and resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour.Yesterday both the Justice Minister and the Taoiseach called for a full report to be carried out – to find out why Mr. McDermott, who’s serving a sentence for such a serious crime and who already has 91 previous convictions, was being kept in a low security open prison.
