The city of New York is set to rename a Brooklyn block after its most notable export: Christopher George Latore Wallace, better known as iconic rapper The Notorious B.I.G. The segment of St. James Place between Gates Avenue and Fulton Street in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood where Biggie grew up will soon be officially known as Christopher Wallace Way. The proposal passed its biggest political hurdle this past Wednesday when Brooklyn Community Board 2 voted to approve the re-naming petition in a landslide decision. The dedication is expected to be approved by the City Council and Mayor Bill De Blasio in their next session. As Rolling Stone notes, the leader of the initiative, LeRoy McCarthy, said that if the measure is officially passed, the new sign will be officially dedicated around Biggie’s birthday on May 21st of next year. “Honoring Biggie symbolizes more than just one man,” McCarthy tells Rolling Stone. “It symbolizes a culture. It symbolizes a borough. It symbolizes a people, and hip-hop is worldwide.”Over the years, there have been a handful of artists who helped define their era, who were the manifestation of the time and place in which they existed. The Beach Boys defined the good vibrations of Southern California in the early ’60’s. The Velvet Underground were emblematic of the nascent avant-garde punk scene in lower Manhattan in the late ’60’s and early 70’s. R.E.M. evokes visions of a burgeoning music community in 1980’s Athens, GA. And, of course, no artist embodied the mean streets of Brooklyn in the 90’s more than The Notorious B.I.G.The proposed street dedication is the latest in a long string of Brooklyn-centric tributes to Biggie Smalls. Recently, Nike and the NBA revealed their Biggie-themed “City Edition” Brooklyn Nets uniforms, which feature trim based on the Coogi sweaters that Wallace made famous during his heyday. In 2017, controversy broke out when a building owner in Biggie’s native Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood tried to take down a two-story mural of the rapper to renovate the property. A petition was launched that garnered thousands of signatures to keep the mural, dubbed “The King of New York,” intact, and it was eventually spared. And that’s just one of many Notorious B.I.G. murals spread around Brooklyn. Biggie’s face adorns the sides of buildings throughout the NYC borough—and some of the murals even feature the aforementioned Coogi sweater, like this piece that currently watches over the Bushwick Collective:In honor of the expected re-naming of Christopher Wallace Way, watch this notorious video of a 17-year-old Biggie freestyling on a local Bed-Stuy street corner in 1989:The Notorious B.I.G Street Corner Freestyle (1989)[Video: crakkerjed][H/T Okayplayer]
The new chief executive of Finnish local government and church pension fund Keva has resigned suddenly due to a crisis of confidence between him and the management board, the fund announced.Anna-Kaisa Ikonen, chairman of the Keva board, said: “Unfortunately, Jukka Männistö’s term is very short. “I would like to thank Männistö for his cooperation with the board and for his role in implementing changes in the management of Keva.”Keva, which has €41.5bn in investment assets, manages pensions for employees of local government, the state, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and benefits agency Kela. Keva said Männistö had handed in his letter of resignation to the board of directors on 30 September.“The reason behind the resignation is a crisis of confidence between the board and CEO Männistö,” the pension fund said.Ikonen was not immediately available for further comment. The pension fund said the resignation would be put into effect once Keva’s council approved it, adding that the next council meeting would take place on 8 October. But the process of appointing a new chief executive will begin immediately, it said, with the new leader likely to take up his or her post in the spring of 2016.“Despite the resignation of the CEO, Keva will continue to operate without disruption,” Keva said.Männistö’s appointment as chief executive was only announced last year in May. He was then taking over from Pekka Alanen, Keva’s deputy managing director, who had been acting as interim head following the resignation of Merja Ailus in November 2013.Ailus had become caught up in a scandal involving accusations over personal expenses, taxes and benefits.Following the scandal, Keva worked on reforming its management guidelines, saying it needed to develop a leadership culture by other means than just instructions and rules.

The news that the tourism industry had experienced a bumper July has given the Donegal tourism industry a huge boost. County Manager Seamus Neely says Donegal has so much to offer visitorsA number of surveys this summer have all concluded that this summer is shaping up to be one of the best tourism seasons in almost a decade for the county. And the most recent news coming from online travel agent, EBookers.com, that Donegal ranked number 1 in a nationwide poll with a staggering increase of 800 per cent in bookings is certainly evidence that County Donegal is fast becoming Ireland’s favourite holiday destination. Welcoming the news, Seamus Neely, Chairman of Donegal Tourism Ltd and Donegal County Manager said he is absolutely delighted that Donegal has seen an influx of holidaymakers this summer.“It is my view that Donegal has a fantastic range of visitor products. We have some of the best Hotels, B&B’s and Guesthouses in Ireland. We have more Blueflag Beaches than any other County in the Country, and most important of all, we offer a high quality tourism product at very competitive rates.“I would like to praise the excellent work of Fáilte Ireland, Donegal Hotel Federation, Donegal Self-Catering Association, B&B Ireland, and all of the Small and Medium Sized Enterprises that have really come together this year to ensure that Donegal’s tourism product is as competitive as any on the Island of Ireland.“I think it is important to recognise the contribution of the Elected Members on Donegal County Council for their continued support for the tourism sector. It is our ambition that the rest of the year will be as successful as the last number of months. There are still plenty of reasons to visit Donegal this summer and autumn.” Donegal County Council launched a new destination tourism website – www.govisitdonegal.com in February 2013, began an intensive marketing campaign aimed at the staycation market in April. GoVisitDonegal.com saw an extraordinary increase of 463% in visitor traffic in July, with many users searching for information on beaches, accommodation and festivals or events. The €104,000 advertising campaign targeted the key visitor markets in Belfast, Dublin, Cork and Galway, through a range of outdoor billboards, bus advertising in the capital and an intensive national radio and print campaign. The campaign was funded by Donegal Local Development Company and Inishowen Development Partnership under the LEADER element of the Rural Development Programme.Tourism Development Officer, Kevin O’Connor added it is clear that Donegal has benefited from the heatwave in July.“However, I think it is worth noting that while the weather was an attraction for many people, there were certainly other factors in making Donegal the number one choice for holidaymakers in 2013.“Our festivals and events programme, marketed under the Gathering and Donegal Gathering Brands has been second to none. Big ticket events such as the Earagail Arts Festival, Feile An Grianan, the Donegal Rally, Letterkenny Live, A Taste of Donegal Food Festival are major attractors for visitors. That is not to forget the hundreds of community-driven events and gatherings that have really added to the annual festival calendar. “We have also benefited from our partnership work with the City of Culture team, and our trade have been very astute in creating innovative packages around the big events happening in Derry this year. “TOURISM BOSSES SAY DONEGAL CAN CONTINUE TO WOO VISITORS was last modified: August 15th, 2013 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:County Managerdonegal tourismSEAMUS NEELYtourism
SANTA CLARA — George Kittle blamed the 49ers’ loss Sunday on a lack of intensity, but it was only a one-game indictment.“I don’t think it’s an overall issue,” Kittle said Tuesday. “I bet you there are a lot of different reasons for a lot of different guys that the intensity didn’t show. But you could feel it on the whole sideline, whether it was coaches, players, staff, it just felt different.”It felt different for another reason, too, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo relying on his star …
21 May 2013 The National Energy Regulator of South Africa has given state company Eskom a licence to go ahead with its Sere wind farm near Koekenaap in the Western Cape. “Sere is our first large-scale renewable energy project,” Eskom chief executive officer Brian Dames said in a statement on Monday. “It demonstrates our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and to investing in a sustainable energy future.” The project will cost R2.4-billion and is expected to be in full commercial operation by the end of 2014. It is expected to create about 170 direct jobs during construction. Taking its name from the Nama word for “cool breeze”, the Sere wind farm will generate up to 100 megawatts (MW) of power for the national grid and will lead to the saving of approximately 4.7-million tonnes of carbon emissions over 20 years. It has been funded by a group of development finance organisations, including the World Bank, African Development Bank, Clean Technology Fund and Agence Francaise de Developpement. “We are very pleased that we have been able to take advantage of attractive financing from international development finance institutions to construct the project at costs which compare favourably with the market,” Dames said. Forty-six Siemens 2.3-108 wind turbine generators will make up the Sere farm, as well as construction of a new substation and 132-kilovolt (KV) distribution line. It has an expected operating life of 20 years, with average annual energy production of about 233 00-megawatt hours (MW-h), enough clean energy to power about 97 000 homes. Eskom also has a 100 MW concentrating solar plant project close to Upington in the Northern Cape, and has installed solar photovoltaic panels at it headquarters and two coal-fired power stations, with plans to roll out these panels at more of its facilities.
