I will continue to liaise with the HSE and Minister Stephen Donnelly to push for this centre to open sooner, rather than later,” Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe told the Limerick Post.Minister Donnelly said: “I would like to thank the HSE for their ongoing work in developing these vaccination centres across the country. These centres will be ready well in advance of vaccine supply when they will be used as part of our programme. People can expect to see these vaccination centres ready and waiting in their county,” said Minister Donnelly.“We have always said the vaccination programme would only be limited by the availability and reliability of supply in these early stages of the programme. In the coming months supply will increase substantially and we will see these centres operating to full capacity and administering vaccines to the general population, following the Government priority list,” added the Minister. first_img29 April 2008Speaking at South Africa’s Freedom Day celebrations at the Turfhall Stadium in Landsdowne, Cape Town on Sunday, President Thabo Mbeki called for “all hands on deck” to tackle the challenges facing the country.Mbeki urged everyone to get involved in creating a new South Africa; to become the kind of citizens who did not do crime, were not racist, sexist or xenophobic, and who worked hard to make the country succeed.“We believe that by coming together and working in partnerships as government, business, labour, civil society and communities, we will succeed.”Mbeki admitted that the country faced many challenges. “There are still too many people who are poor,” he said. “There are still too many people without jobs. There are too many people without houses. There are still too many children who study in dilapidated schools.”There were also “other problems we must confront together as they impact negatively on the standard of living of the people. These include the national electricity emergency, the high food and fuel prices and the high interest rates”.Mbeki said that since the government’s call to South Africans earlier this year to work together to save electricity and help stabilise the national electricity grid, much had been done by both businesses and households, and he thanked the nation for their positive response. He said that even though progress had been uneven since the country’s first democratic elections on 27 April 1994, “there is no doubt that freedom has given us the possibility to move our country away from the terrible legacy of apartheid, opening opportunities in the quest for a better life for all South Africans.”Fourteen years after the first day that South Africans, irrespective of race, got to vote, “we walk tall because of collective efforts that culminated on 27 April being the country’s Freedom Day,” Mbeki said.Referring to a recent spate of racist and xenophobic incidents, Mbeki said these showed that South Africa still contained “pockets of backwardness” which had to be confronted. “We cannot allow racism and racist attitudes to prevail in our society, in our communities or in any of our diverse and varied institutions.”The President also spoke out against violence against women and children. “Clearly we can’t proclaim to be a free nation while women and children are not free to enjoy our freedom.”He said men had an important part to play in advancing affirmative social values and mending the social fabric that had been torn by “those that behave like animals”. Men had an important message to give to their compatriots, namely that “real men do not abuse”.Mbeki said that in the country’s work to transform the lives of its people, particular attention needed to be paid to young people, who faced increasing challenges, such as substance abuse, unemployment, crime and the absence of good role models.“Indeed, many of our young have to face difficult challenges at times without parental or adult guidance.“All of us, as a society, need to inculcate among the youth the ethos and ethics that help build great and successful nations; we need to help bring about a spirit of resilience in the face of what would seem formidable odds.“We need to bring up young people who know that, to sustain the progress of the last 14 years, we need skills and better education.”Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

first_imgIt’s All Semantics: Open Data, Linked Data & The Semantic WebThe State of Linked Data in 2010Top 10 Semantic Web Products of 2009ReadWriteWeb Interview With Tim Berners-LeeSemantic Web Patterns: A Guide to Semantic Technologies Perhaps a bigger problem is that currently only one object can be specified per web page, which prevents multiple topics or people on a single web page from being semantically marked up. Also, Iskold pointed out that there is no way to disambiguate objects – so if two objects have the same name, they are considered the same thing by Facebook. For example, ‘Paris’ could refer to the city in France or the city in the USA (also it could be the name of an infamous socialite).Kick Starting the Semantic WebThese issues ideally should be ironed out, but for now it’s clear that Facebook wants Open Graph to be very simple so that as many publishers as possible implement it. That’s a sensible business decision, although it means that we’re only getting a limited version of the Semantic Web for now. However, the support of Semantic technologies by big companies like Facebook, Google and Best Buy will be enough to kick start this new era of a smarter and more structured Web of data. What do you think, is Facebook doing enough to support Semantic Web standards? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification richard macmanus Tags:#conferences#Facebook#Features#NYT#Semantic Web#SemTech 2010#Structured Data#web This week we’ve been exploring the emergence of the Semantic Web among companies like Best Buy and Google. It’s all thanks to RDFa, code that is inserted into the HTML of web pages to add extra meaning. The increasing usage of RDFa was one of the main themes at the recent Semantic Technology conference in San Francisco. There is perhaps no better example than Facebook‘s use of RDFa. We chatted to Facebook open standards evangelist David Recordon to find out more.In April this year, Facebook announced a large-scale new platform called the Open Graph. The stated goal of the Open Graph protocol was to enable publishers to “integrate [their] Web pages into the social graph.” Essentially, each web page can now become an ‘object’ in Facebook’s social graph (which is Facebook’s term for how people connect to each other in its network). This means that pages can be referenced and connected across social network user profiles, blog posts, search results, Facebook’s News Feed, and more. The Open Graph in a NutshellThe Open Graph is a wide-ranging platform which includes features such as ‘Like’ buttons and publisher plug-ins. It also includes a simple, RDF-based markup. This requires publishers to include at least 4 metadata properties in each object: title, type, image, URL. There are a few additional properties which may be optionally added, such as site_name and description. Facebook’s KISS (Keep it Simple Semantics)The reason that Facebook is using an abbreviated version of RDFa is that they want to make it as simple as possible for publishers to deploy it. And the W3C is fine with this, because it has a rules standard called RIF that can convert Open Graph code into proper RDFa if needed. Also the W3C and Semantic Web community seem to be having fruitful discussions with Facebook. We asked Facebook open standards evangelist David Recordon why the company chose not to use exact RDFa syntax. He replied that simplicity was paramount, so they wanted to use as few properties as possible. However, Recordon said that Facebook’s code will actually help the adoption of RDFa. He thinks that RDFa will become a more interesting technology when more people are consuming it (via Facebook’s variation of RDFa). Facebook did not set out to support the Semantic Web, added Recordon, it just wanted simple code that was as close as possible to open standards. He told us that Facebook found the “sweet spot” between the complexity of existing Semantic Web standards and the simplicity required for tens of thousands of developers to place ‘objects’ inside their web pages.Open Graph IssuesFacebook’s Open Graph protocol has its issues, which Alex Iskold outlined in a follow-up analysis in May (it should be noted that Iskold’s startup, GetGlue, has been mining web page metadata for a while now – so it’s partly competitive with Facebook, although it also provides support for the Open Graph). Some of Facebook’s issues were due to poor implementation of the markup by Facebook partners, but Recordon told us that much of this has been fixed now. ReadWriteWeb’s Guide to The Semantic Web:center_img Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Related Posts When the Open Graph was announced, ReadWriteWeb feature writer Alex Iskold wrote a comprehensive guide to the Open Graph for publishers, users and competitors. Here’s how he described the markup: “…the markup enables publishers to say what object is on the page – a movie, a book, a recording artist, an event, a sports team, etc. This automatically enables semantics, that is, an understanding that the user is not just interacting with a web page, but that he or she is liking a specific kind of thing. Semantics then leads to bucketing of the objects into categories like books, movies, music, etc., and gives rise to all sort of applications, including personalized recommendations. Perhaps even more importantly, the markup helps Facebook connect the users across common interests across different web sites.”The syntax that Facebook uses is fairly similar to RDFa, without being an exact match. Sandro Hawke from the W3C (the Web’s official standards body), told ReadWriteWeb last week that Facebook is using RDFa “in an abbreviated, not really good modeling way.” The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Auditlast_img read more

first_imgQuestionable goaltend vs. SMU seals UCLA win.UCLA, the No.11 seed in the South, just upset sixth-seeded SMU 60-59 in truly bizarre fashion. The Bruins had possession of the ball after an awful SMU turnover, trailing by two points with less than 30 seconds remaining. They ran their offense and got the ball in the hands of point guard Bryce Alford, who had hit 8-of-10 three-pointers up to that point.Alford launched an off-balance three-pointer from the left wing. From the release, it looked like it was going to fall short. SMU center Yanick Moreira thought the same thing, and he jumped up to corral what he thought would be an airball.Except, it wasn’t. Moreira was ruled to have goaltended the shot, and Alford was awarded what would be the game-winning three-pointer. SMU’s final two shots fell short.Did the refs get it right? first_imgOntario’s Progressive Conservative government says it has cut the province’s deficit by $500 million, bringing the figure down to $14.5 billion in its first few months in office. The change is announced in the government’s Fall Economic Statement for 2018-2019, its first major fiscal update since winning the spring election.“The fiscal hole is deep,” Finance Minister Vic Fedeli said in presenting the document to the legislature on Thursday afternoon. “The road ahead is not an easy one and will require difficult decisions. Everyone across the province will be required to make sacrifices, without exception.”The government said it has made progress on cutting the deficit by finding $3.2 billion in efficiencies in operations, including a hiring freeze across the public service. The belt-tightening measures laid out also include rolling the positions of three independent officers — the environmental commissioner, the child and youth advocate and the French language services commissioner — into the offices of the auditor general or the provincial ombudsman.Government staff could not say what will happen to those working in the eliminated offices, but Premier Doug Ford has consistently promised that no jobs would be lost as a result of his cost-cutting.Plans for a French-language university have also been cancelled, though the government could not immediately say how much money the move would save.Though it is spending less, the government said it is also taking in $2.7 billion less in revenue in the fiscal year — including $1.5 billion attributed to the cancellation of cap and trade.More than $300,000 in lost revenue is attributed to cancelling planned tax increases, including one that would have raised taxes for small businesses, the document says. The Tories had said the previous Liberal government left a $15 billion deficit, a figure disputed by critics, who said it includes spending promised by the Liberals but cancelled by the current regime. While the document mentions returning the province’s budget to balance, it does not spell out how long it will take to achieve that goal. “Our path forward is clear, and that is why it is important to maintain our resolve to pursue fiscal discipline and ultimately restore our books to balance,” Fedeli said. The fiscal update also promises to eliminate income tax for those earning less than $30,000 a year. The government says the tax cut offsets its decision to scrap a planned increase of the province’s minimum wage that was set to take effect next year.Critics, however, have said raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour as the Liberals had planned would give low-income workers more money than the income tax cut would save. An independent financial analysis came to a similar conclusion. The tax cut is expected to cost the province $495 million in lost revenue, the document says. The update also pledges to expand hours of operation at Beer Store and LCBO outlets across the province, allowing them to open seven days a week until 11 p.m.Shawn Jeffords and Paola Loriggio, The Canadian Presslast_img read more

first_imgNew Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday removed its Joint Director Satyabrata Kumar, who is now in London assisting UK prosecutors in fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi’s bail hearing case at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court. In a confusion that erupted consequently because of the repatriation of an official investigating a case such as the PNB bank fraud case, ED headquarters in Delhi overturned Kumar’s repatriation order within minutes. Kumar is the main investigating officer from ED in the Nirav Modi case. Sources here said that Director of ED Sanjay Kumar Mishra has cancelled the order and reinstated him into his original post in the Mumbai Zonal Office (MZO) Unit I. The order, dated March 29, said that Kumar’s five-year tenure with the federal agency had ended. Citing Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) guidelines for personnel deputation, the order states that “no extension in deputation beyond 5th year is allowed and deputationist officer is deemed to have been relieved on the date of expiry of deputation period unless the competent authority has with requisite approvals, extended the period of deputation, in writing, prior to the date of expiry.” According to DoPT guidelines on personnel deputation, an officer’s tenure in the agency might be extended for up to two additional years. ED Special Director Vineet Agarwal had signed the order, which further stated that under the current circumstances, all cases being overseen by Kumar, including the USD 2-billion PNB Bank fraud case against Nirav Modi, must be handed over to his immediate superior authority, the Additional Director (western region), who also sits in Mumbai. The repatriation order, which is in possession of the Millennium Post also mentions a Supreme Court directive passed in November 2018, which forbade ED from transferring any officer investigating the coal block allocation scam. The ED order states that as one of the investigating officers in this case Kumar will continue to probe the case from its MZO. However, according to agency officials, it is not possible for Kumar to oversee any ED investigation if he is relieved of his duties in the federal investigative agency. Director Mishra confirmed on Friday that Kumar has not been transferred and that the necessary paperwork required for his two-year extension has already been moved. This cancellation of Kumar’s repatriation order will be followed by an approval of an extension of tenure of Kumar which has already been sent for clearance to the Department of Revenue under thew Union Finance Ministry and the DoPT, sources here said. The ED also issued a clarification through its Twitter handle. “Certain media reports have been appearing that Joint Director supervising investigation in the case of Nirav Modi has been relieved. This report is not correct and denied,” it said. With PTI inputslast_img read more

first_imgNew Delhi: About 25 developing countries will be participating in a meeting to be held in the national capital from May 13-14 to discuss various issues related to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), an official said. The commerce ministry has already received approval from the Election Commission to hold this mini-ministerial meet. EC’s nod is necessary since the model code of conduct is in place. The meeting assumes significance as several countries are raising questions over the relevance of the Geneva-based global trade body. Member countries could deliberate upon issues such as reforming the WTO, the official said. Recently, the WTO cautioned that the global trade will continue to face strong headwinds this year and in 2020 after growing slower-than-expected in 2018 due to rising trade tensions and increased economic uncertainty. India has time and again stressed the importance and relevance of the WTO for promoting global trade. This will be the second mini-ministerial meet to be organised by India. In March last year, over 50 nations participated in a meeting here to explore options for resolving various issues and re-invigorating the WTO.last_img read more
