Powered by Firework The ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle has ended all speculations about his retirement. Upon his dismissal after an explosive knock of 72 in just 41 balls in the final ODI, Gayle received a standing ovation from the Trinidad crowd. Even the Indian players came forward to congratulate him, which led to rumors that the Jamaican batsman might just have played his last match for West Indies. But in a video posted by Windies Cricket, he can be seen saying “I didn’t announce any retirement. Yeah, I am still with West Indies cricket until any further notice”.Advertisement Chris Gayle made his ODI debut in 1999 against India in Toronto and the 39-year-old is West Indies’ all-time run-scorer in ODIs with 10480 runs from 301 matches. In his 20-year career in one-day cricket he has registered 25 hundreds and 54 fifties. And on Wednesday in the final game of the ODI series, Gayle walked out to bat with a special jersey marking his 301st ODI appearance. The ‘Gaylestorm’ started right away with 8 boundaries and 5 maximums before being dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed. Him and Virat Kohli were seen doing their famous high-five celebration while he was returning back to the pavilion.Advertisement Earlier, West Indies had won the toss and decided to bat. Together with his opening partner Evin Lewis, Gayle put up a 115-run stand in just 10 overs. However, Jason Holder and his men couldn’t take advantage of his stint as the Men in Blue won by six wickets.Advertisement Advertisement

Kwakwani floodAs the Regional Disaster Risk Management strategy in Kwakwani remains in effect, acting Civil Defence Commission (CDC) Director General, Lieutenant Colonel Kester Craig related that relief materials, including food and medical supplies, are expected to reach the affected area today. He, however, noted that the water has begun to recede. The assessment team that visited the area late last week with acting CDC Director General, Lieutenant Colonel Kester CraigGuyana Times learnt that the CDC has dispatched millions of dollars in food relief and cleaning agents to the area. “We should be collecting all the food stuff tomorrow [Monday] and start to transport to Kwakwani to the affected households,” the acting Head stressed. He had earlier explained that a multiagency approach involving the Public Health Ministry, Hydrometeorological Service, and CDC volunteers was crafted to ascertain the overall needs of the affected residents, who, in some cases, were under six to seven feet of water. Similarly to Lethem and its surrounding areas, food security in Kwakwani is also being threatened since farms are inundated. The major assessment was carried out to see the impact of last week’s flooding, particularly in Lamp Island and the Waterfront area of Kwakwani. Speaking on the preliminary reports coming out of that assessment, Craig told this publication that residents had already adjusted their building patterns in preparation for periodic flooding. He noted that some even constructed secondary houses which were above the height of the primary houses which are submerged.“It is something that happens every year and people have built their homes to adapt to the situation. The houses are built on stilts and persons have chosen to remain in their homes. Those who have been affected have moved to relatives already,” he told this newspaper. He cautioned that this did not take away from the fact that the affected residents would have needs that must be catered for such as health and food.“We need to continually monitor the water level, persons need to continue to ensure the water they drink is safe and the assessment will come from the region to decide where resources will be focused on and how much will be required,” he pointed out recently.About 300 households have been affected by the present flood. Those affected are from the Kwakwani Waterfront, Lamp Island, Aroraima and Ginger Island areas.Residents in recent days complained of household appliances and belongings being damaged due to the flooding, which they said were caused by the inclement weather pattern coupled with overtopping of the Berbice River.Regional Chairman Renis Morian has said there was need to understand the backdrop against which the flooding was taking place, as he pointed out that due to increased rainfall, the water level in the river was high. He said those affected were mainly from low-lying areas. He warned that should persons continue to live in such areas, they would experience flooding. Residents are utilising boats as the primary mode of transportation, since most of the roads are inundated. However, Craig said Sunday that some of the roads leading into the area can be used. The Lok Sabha on Friday approved the extension of President’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir for another six months, beginning July 3.Home Minister Amit Shah assured the House that “democratic, free and fair Assembly elections will be held in the State by the year-end”.Article 370 of the Constitution, which extends special status to Jammu and Kashmir, is “temporary in nature’’ and “not permanent,” he told the House.“The Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir is not yet in existence, so I have brought a Bill to extend President’s rule for six months. The Election Commission has also held talks with the Central government and all political parties, and decided that it would be possible to hold elections at the end of this year,” Mr. Shah said.Quota BillThe Lok Sabha also cleared the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2019, to replace an ordinance issued by the previous government. With this, people living along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir will get the benefit of reservation in direct recruitment, promotion and admission to professional courses on a par with those living along the Actual Line of Control (ALoC).Hitting out at the Congress and the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Mr. Shah said it was because of them that a third of Jammu and Kashmir was not with India. “Who is responsible?” he asked, drawing a sharp reaction from the Congress members. The House witnessed disruptions over Mr. Shah naming Nehru.‘A mistake’Calling Kashmir a mistake made by the Congress and Nehru, he held them responsible for dividing the country on the basis of religion.Mr. Shah asserted that his government had a “zero tolerance” policy towards terrorism. “We have spent ₹2,307 crore to upgrade the security apparatus in the State,” he said.Continuing his attack on the Opposition party, he said Article 356 (President’s Rule) had so far been imposed 132 times, of which the Congress had used it 93 times to dismiss State governments. He said his government withdrew the security of 919 people in the State as they faced no threat. During the tenure of President’s rule in J&K, terrorism had been tackled strongly and the State saw development on a number of fronts, including the conduct of panchayat elections“Unwarranted”Mr. Shah’s proposal to extend President’s rule in the State drew sharp remarks from the Opposition benches, including Manish Tewari from the Congress and N.K. Premachandran of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP).Both parliamentarians opposed the proposal saying there was not enough ground for the Union government to do so.“Congress has handed a progressive State to succeeding governments in Jammu and Kashmir. It is the alliance of ideologically incompatible parties that is responsible for the state of affairs in Jammu and Kashmir, where President’s Rule is being sought so frequently,” Mr. Tewari said, referring to the alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Karim Bellarabi celebrates after scoring the fastest goal in the German league historyKarim Bellarabi scored the quickest goal in 52 seasons of the Bundesliga to help Bayer Leverkusen beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the opening round on Saturday.Bellarabi scored nine seconds after kickoff, beating the previous record of 11 seconds set by Giovane Elber for Bayern Munich in January 1998, Ulf Kirsten for Leverkusen in March 2002 and Paul Freier for Bochum in May 2003.Hakan Calhanoglu passed the ball to Son Heung-min, who played Sebastian Boenisch through. Boenisch passed to Bellarabi, who eluded Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter and slotted inside the left post from 12 meters.”We did a lot of things very well,” said Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt after his Bundesliga debut. “We constantly attacked the opponents and stayed very active.”Dortmund’s efforts were frustrated by disciplined defending and intense pressure, particularly in the first half with the visitors tiring in the second.”It was a very scrappy game. There was hardly any space,” Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Kehl said.Borussia Dortmund players walk off the field disappointed after losing 2-0 to LeverkusenLeverkusen keeper Bernd Leno made a host of saves to deny the home side a late equalizer, before Bellarabi set up Stefan Kiessling to secure the result in the fifth minute of injury time.”In the end you have to grit your teeth, but when a result like this comes out of it, then it helps you forget the pain,” Kiessling said.Leverkusen holds a 3-2 lead over FC Copenhagen ahead of the home leg of their Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.advertisementEarlier, Schalke let a one-goal lead slip by conceding twice in three minutes to lose to Hannover 2-1.Klaas Jan Huntelaar opened the scoring with a tap-in when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting set him up two minutes into the second half, but Edgar Prib equalized for Hannover in the 67th after a great run and cross from Leonardo Bittencourt.Prib broke quickly three minutes later and set up Joselu for what proved to be the winning goal.”Our plan worked until the 67th minute,” said Schalke coach Jens Keller, whose side crashed out of the first round of the German Cup after losing to third-division Dynamo Dresden 2-1 on Monday. Also Saturday, promoted Cologne drew 0-0 with visiting Hamburger SV on its return to the Bundesliga after two seasons in the second division.”After 75 goals (conceded) in the previous season, a scoreless draw is good,” said Hamburg coach Mirko Slomka.Haris Seferovic’s 15th-minute goal on his Bundesliga debut was enough for Eintracht Frankfurt to beat Freiburg 1-0. The Swiss striker scooped the loose ball inside the post after Freiburg’s defense failed to clear.”We can play much, much better. We made too many simple mistakes. But I don’t want to complain,” said Frankfurt coach Thomas Schaaf on his return to the Bundesliga after a season away.Werder Bremen came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Hertha Berlin and Hoffenheim defeated Augsburg 2-0 at home.Julian Schieber scored with Hertha’s first attack in the 18th minute and the former Borussia Dortmund striker claimed his second in the 47th as the home side had most of the chances.Assani Lukimya pulled one back against the run of play six minutes later and Franco di Santo equalized two minutes after that for the visitors.Adam Szalai got Hoffenheim off the mark in the 33rd after Augsburg missed several chances to clear, two minutes before Tarik Elyounoussi made it 2-0 with the visitors’ defense still in disarray.Defending champion Bayern Munich kicked off the season Friday with a 2-1 win over visiting Wolfsburg.
