first_img1 West Ham have completed the signing of defender Angelo Ogbonna from Juventus for an undisclosed fee.The 27-year-old Italy international has penned a four-year deal with the Hammers and becomes their fourth signing of the summer.Ogbonna made his name as a talented defender with Torino before joining their city rivals Juventus in 2013, winning two Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia during his time there.West Ham announced the news on their Twitter account, writing: “BREAKING: The Hammers are delighted to confirm the transfer of Angelo Ogbonna from Juventus.”Ogbonna, who has 10 Italy caps, was an unused substitute during Juventus’ Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in May, following Pedro Obiang, Darren Randolph and Dmitri Payet in moving to Upton Park this summer and is looking forward to working under new Hammers boss Slaven Bilic.“I am delighted to have joined the club,” he told West Ham’s official website.“I wanted to play in the Premier League and am happy to be in London. My heart told me that the right decision was to play for West Ham United.“I cannot wait to start working under Mr Bilic and with my new team-mates. I feel ready for this new adventure.”Ironically, or perhaps as a message to fans as to what to expect, co-owner David Gold tweeted a picture of Ogbonna by accident as he welcomed Obiang to the club back in June.Fellow owner David Sullivan’s son Jack Tweeted that the fee was an “eight-figure” sum – meaning the club have splashed out in excess of £10million on both Ogbonna and Payet.Bilic saw his side progress into the second qualifying round of the Europa League with a 1-0 second-leg victory over FC Lusitans on Thursday evening. The squad for that fixture included a lot of inexperienced talent from the club’s academy but many first-team regulars are expected to feature in the next stage against Birkirkara of Malta.During Sam Allardyce’s time at the club, he opted for just three experienced central defenders in James Tomkins, James Collins and Winston Reid – but that trio will now have strong competition for their places. There are also two young players in Reece Burke and Reece Oxford, both of whom have played against Lusitans as the latter became the youngest player in the club’s history, who will be hoping for a chance under Bilic.Despite investing in the squad already, West Ham have still been linked with a return for Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson and the free transfer of Alex Song – both of whom were on loan at Upton Park last season.last_img read more
